In-Depth Understanding of ICD Completion Technology Working Principle

The rate-controlled production (RCP) inflow control devices (ICDs) are valves placed in the lower completion of oil and gas wells, capable autonomously controlling reservoir inflow. This technology self-regulates undesired phases, such as water, by choking flow after breakthrough event, thus improving recovery factor reducing water production. In this context, article presents a numerical study that describes working principle RCP based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. models conservation equations flow, volume (VOF) multiphase model, dynamic body interaction (DFBI) model to simulate valve’s movement caused its with flow. demonstrates possibility studying alone or coupled whole assembly rock. difference valve efficiency considering entire rock is 19% less compared stand-alone analysis valve. Finally, provides deep understanding near wellbore, assembly, valves, along chocking, which could be helpful future researchers interested subsurface processes.
